StrengthsWork: Taking CliftonStrengths from Awareness to Excellence
As a Gallup-certified CliftonStrengths coach, I believe deeply in the value of the CliftonStrengths assessment and framework for unlocking individual growth and team success. To get the most out of CliftonStrengths, leaders need more than just the assessment. Bringing the tool to life relies on a well-known Gallup equation:
Talent x Investment = Strength
Your reports outline your natural, innate talents - the recurring patterns of how you uniquely think, feel, or behave. But turning those raw talents into mature strengths requires a real investment of focus and energy. Gallup has done an incredible job investing in a deep library of resources, from podcasts and video overviews to comprehensive reports, designed to support people as they begin to explore their unique profiles.
However, despite this plethora of tools, I have always observed a gap between getting your assessment results and actually knowing how to practice them, or having a clear approach for using the available tools. Too often, leaders feel stuck with the mandate to "practice your strengths," but without a clear, step-by-step plan for how to do that.
That challenge is why we developed StrengthsWork, our proprietary curriculum designed to serve as the deliberate vehicle for that critical investment phase. We wanted to build a clear bridge over that gap, giving individuals a concrete roadmap to systematically focus on each of their Top 5.
The Architecture of StrengthsWork
Instead of a passive learning experience, StrengthsWork is designed to move participants from information to action. We lean into a multi-week commitment because no one reaches the bottom of their leadership capacity in a single workshop. True development takes time and a willingness to practice. We think this happens best when it takes place amidst everyday operations. Our StrengthsWork program is broken down into three distinct parts:
Part 1: Preparation and Preflection
Real discovery doesn’t happen on autopilot; it requires active positioning. This initial phase of the journey is about setting a deliberate plan of action and engaging in "preflection" - the intentional act of looking ahead and setting your intentions before you dive in. During this preparation stage, participants look at their upcoming schedules, reserve dedicated calendar blocks to protect their development space, and gather their Gallup reports to view them with a fresh perspective.
Part 2: The Five-Week Rhythm
The heart of the program lies in the weekly rhythm of Part 2. Over five consecutive weeks, participants focus on a single strength each week, systematically moving from their number-one strength in week one to their number-five strength in week five.
Every week, using the same set of core activities, they follow a consistent rhythm. Participants spend time on Monday looking ahead at their calendars to strategize how to aim that week's focus strength at real-world situations. These could be meetings they’ll be in or tasks that need to get done that week. Throughout the week, they utilize CliftonStrengths digital tools, watch targeted videos, and listen to curated Strengths podcasts to deepen their understanding of the week’s strength. On Fridays, they pause to reflect on where they experienced success and where they recognized underutilization or misapplication of their strength.
Part 3: Reflection
The final phase of StrengthsWork provides an intentional space to reflect on the developmental journey. This is where participants synthesize their learning, track their growth, and evaluate how their Top 5 strengths combine to shape their individual capacity.
The Multiplier Effect: Peer Coaching and Accountability
While independent discovery forms a solid foundation, sustainable growth rarely happens in a vacuum. A key element that makes StrengthsWork impactful is the integration of a dedicated Strengths Partner. We pair participants for short, structured partner chats at the conclusion of each week during part 2. This pairing serves as a built-in buddy system, adding a layer of mutual accountability - preventing leaders from canceling on their own development when the daily pressures of the office take over.
Through balanced, timed dialogue, partners practice stepping away from advice-giving or sharing their own stories. Instead, they serve as sounding boards and supportive mirrors for one another. Participants regularly share that processing what they’re learning with a peer who speaks the same Strengths language is hugely beneficial.
The Value of a Physical Guidebook
We’re all surrounded by digital noise, notifications, and endless screen time, so we intentionally designed StrengthsWork to be anchored by a physical Guidebook. We believe that real reflection requires a physical space to slow down and process what you are learning.
Having a physical book in your hands provides a dedicated offline space where you can write down your weekly strategy on Mondays, capture notes and observations throughout the week, and formally journal your reflections on Fridays. Writing by hand helps slow down the thinking process, forcing a level of focus and mindfulness that typing on a screen simply can’t replicate. The Guidebook serves as a permanent record of your personal leadership evolution - a tool you can look back on, leaf through, and reference long after the StrengthsWork journey is completed.
Real-World Impact: What Participants Experience
Because StrengthsWork utilizes digital tools, short videos, podcast listening, journaling, and peer dialogue, it resonates across a wide variety of learning preferences. Participants frequently share how much they appreciate this multi-modal approach - whether they thrive on watching quick video overviews, listening to curated podcasts on their commute, or stepping away from screens to process their thoughts by hand.
For many, it is simply the predictable structure of the provided rhythm that allows them to make the most progress. For others, acquiring a shared Strengths language provides an immediate vocabulary for articulating what they uniquely bring to the table and for asking better, more insightful questions of their peers.
We frequently hear about breakthroughs where participants uncover why certain tasks have felt uniquely draining, allowing them to re-engage long-standing challenges with fresh clarity. One participant shared that the StrengthsWork journey gave them the exact clarity and motivation they needed to push past a years-long pause and complete their doctoral dissertation. Another senior leader, nearing retirement, utilized what they learned during StrengthsWork to set their team up for seamless succession before stepping down.
Across all of these stories, the most consistent piece of feedback we receive is just how valuable the Strengths Partner connection truly is. Time and again, participants share that having a dedicated, recurring space to debrief and process their weekly growth with a colleague going through the same journey became the unexpected highlight of their entire experience.
Flexible Implementation: Bringing StrengthsWork to Your Organization
We designed StrengthsWork to be versatile enough to fit the unique operational goals of diverse organizations - from government agencies and higher education divisions to corporate teams and non-profit boards. Depending on your strategic goals, StrengthsWork can be implemented across a variety of formats:
Intact Leadership Teams: Roll the program out across an executive cabinet or department team to align individual talents with division-wide goals and create high-performing team dynamics.
Cross-Functional Cohorts: Build connections across organizational silos by pairing leaders from different divisions into cohort groups supported by peer Strengths Partners.
Onboarding & New Manager Development: Embed StrengthsWork into early-career onboarding paths or new manager training programs to establish self-awareness and professional intentionality from day one.
Organization-wide Professional Development: Everyone benefits from better understanding themselves and how to leverage their strengths. StrengthsWork is a perfect all-staff developmental opportunity to build leadership capacity and engage folks across the organization.
Moving From Awareness to Excellence
If your organization's leadership initiatives have historically stalled out at the point of basic assessment awareness, it isn't a failure of the tool - it is a missing plan for deeper development. Raw talent only becomes a mature strength when you commit the time, structure, and focus required to practice it intentionally.
StrengthsWork provides that architecture. By committing to a deliberate, multi-week rhythm, leaders build a muscle of professional intentionality to support individual growth. If you think your team or organization would benefit from a sustained investment in developing individual strengths, we would love to connect!
